FIRST MISSION: Review issues related to water resource management policies and water resource destruction control capabilities in Indonesia systematically for the life, advancement, and prosperity of Indonesia.

SECOND MISSION: IWI believes that through good planning, building communication with stakeholders, enhancing professionalism and knowledge capacity, issues related to the utilization of water resources can be addressed effectively, efficiently, and sustainably.

THIRD MISSION: IWI is committed to continuously strengthening and enhancing the capacity of water resources stakeholders in Indonesia through assessment activities, policy formulation, the formulation of recommendations and alternative solutions, and the development of technological innovations to help address the problems of water resources in Indonesia.

The initiative to establish the Indonesia Water Institute (IWI) in April 2007 was driven more by the conditions of water and water resources (SDA) problems faced by Indonesia in general and the capital city of DKI Jakarta in particular. Large floods that hit the capital in early February 2007 with economic losses reaching Rp. 8.8 trillion (± 1.8% of Jakarta's GRDP) with 53 casualties as well as the raw water crisis that has hit the capital since 1994 which has triggered continuous extraction of deep groundwater so as to accelerate the rate of land subsidence in many places in the capital were the factors that led to the formation of IWI. Poor governance of water and water resources in Indonesia which has the potential to trigger a water crisis in many regions, especially in Java, Madura and Bali has become the focus of attention of water, water resources and environmental experts who have taken the initiative to form an organizational forum that can accommodate creativity on values, integrity, expertise, scholarship, and responsibility for the environment and the future of our civilization. Illustration of Multipurpose Deep Tunnel Challenges in the problems of water, water resources, and the environment continue to accumulate and require commitment and our hard work together to find solutions. After launching a book about the Multi-Purpose Deep Tunnel (MPDT) Jakarta on April 24, 2007 at J.W. Marriott Hotel Jakarta, IWI has begun to be recognized by many parties, including the public, the media, the government and the business world. On 9 November 2009, IWI received an offer of international cooperation from a water resources research institute from the Netherlands to conduct research on Indonesia's water balance. After that, IWI began to collaborate directly or indirectly with many entities at home and abroad. On February 23, 2012, IWI officially as a legal entity that focuses on the study, innovation, policy, planning and development of water, water resources and the environment was confirmed by Notary Mansur Ishak, S.H. in South Jakarta. The South Jakarta District Court ratified IWI as an official legal entity on March 28, 2012 with register number No. 87 / A.DLL / HKM / 2012 at the Registrar's Office of the South Jakarta District Court.

Collect, review, formulate, and share information and knowledge related to natural resource management strategies and policies with stakeholders. Strengthen capacity for mediation, facilitation, negotiation, advocacy, and campaigns related to natural resource management issues. Support and promote policies for the management and utilization of natural resources that are in favor of the interests of the people that prioritize sustainable aspects in a framework of thinking and acting mutually. Pay attention to all trends and changes that occur to be more anticipatory of threats to the availability, sustainability and disaster risks associated with natural resources so that the capacity for mitigation and adaptation can be measured. Take advantage of all available resources and use a multi-media approach in various types and forms to achieve the best natural resource management system to face the future challenges of our civilization.
